The dangers of Tip-cat

Oh, the good old days. People used to make their own amusement - and rather dangerous some of them could be.

From the Keighley News, dated 17th September 1899:

On Wednesday evening a painful accident occurred to a young man named Thomas Henry Yewdall, late of Cracoe, and in the employ of Mr. Smith Redman. It appears that some youths were playing near the Canal Bridge at tip-cat when one of them lost his hold of the stick, which struck with stinging force Yewdall's left eye, dislodging the ball. The unfortunate young man was seen by a doctor, and was then removed by train to Bradford, whence he was carried to the Royal Infirmary in the horse-drawn ambulance.
